From the Helm.....Ahoy!

Ahoy! Missed some of you at our first race of the season. The wind was beautiful. We had five boats show up. Don Allebach thought he had a crew, but at the last minute injury had him waiting at the dock hoping for a crew, but no one showed. It was great to have a new boat on the water. Jack Riley came out, he followed us around to see what racing is all about. Hope to see him at the starting line soon.

Mary Jane and I were the race committee the first race so we took the committee boat out, set up the course, and anchored the committee boat at the start, before we hopped on our boat. We then had everyone gather around for the three minute pre-start and went from there.

We raced back to back. I wasn't too impressed with our ability to count the second race since Mary Jane and I quit after the second time at the windward mark. We should have gone around one more time. Duh! But I was encouraged on my leadership since another boat saw that we quit and they said, "Let's follow the Commodore!" We discussed the setup at Windjammer Point after the race. We decided that it would be better to use the committee boat to setup the race course, but use two marks one at the start with a red flag indicating the start line and one at the finish line with a blue flag indicating the finish line. We will then park the committee boat at Windjammer Point so the racers can see the race board on the committee boat. Since changing our race committee format to this schedule, I would ask the racers to be cognizant & aware of any boat in trouble and offer assistance if needed. Any racer leaving the race to offer help will get credit for a race and we will use his average for a score.

WELCOME ABOARD PARTY
What a great party! We had 21 members and 17 guests. The weather turned out fine after a week of cold and rain. Thanks for everyone's help and we hope our guests will return and join our club.

ON THE WATER BOAT SHOW is coming up this weekend. We still need additional help with the refreshment stand. See the schedule below to see the times vacant. Call Norm. 561-1682 and let him know if you can fill in and help.

Elsewhere in the Newsletter are some suggestions for Sunfish races & lessons. We have a number of people interested in racing Sunfish. Let's get them out on Sundays.

I am also preparing a schedule for Sailing lessons. If you are interested in taking lessons or helping with teaching, let me know.

Your ideas and support are welcome, we want our sailing events to be fun, educational and of course competitive.

See you on the water!

Norm West, Commodore

SUNFISH REGATTAS AT WINDJAMMER POINT
Mark your calendar for these dates!

  • Saturday, July 13
  • Saturday, August 17
  • Saturday, September 21

We will have a 6-8 boat race with the top 3 boats competing at the next leveL There will be awards for the top 3 boats in each category. I would like to divide the races into 3 categories. I need your input on this. I was thinking of age categories, ie.,

  • Category 1 (10-15 years old)
  • Category 2 (16-18 years old)
  • Category 3 (18 yrs ~ older)

Should there be an entry fee? We would plan to have a pot luck supper aRer each race day. The club would provide ice tea and soft drink. I would like to have a person in charge of each race day to help plan. Do I have anyone willing to help out on this? More hands make light work!

A WORD FROM RACE COMMITEE CHAIRMAN
The Race Committee needs your help! We need nonracing members who would be willing to run one race day over the next several months. We will train you. We had one group of volunteers who worked with George Abbe on Sunday, June 2. This is an opportunity to get insight into racing, a chance to get to know other members, and the experience of watching a race close at hand under the supervision of an "old salt" to help you learn the ropes. Securing additional volunteers to help run races will be a great help to our club.

We also need some "old salts" who are familiar with running a race to assist our less experienced members. You are needed to either train new members, or handle a race day on your own. Don Allebach our Race Committee Chairman will be calling you for assistance. Please don't turn him down!
