the Bridge
It's
hard to believe that school will be starting back up soon. The summer has just
flown by. I hope for many of you this summer involved lots of sailing. If not,
don't fret. There is still plenty of time to harness the wind! If you're a cruiser,
the fall is the best time to sail (I think). Cooler temperatures combined with
more consistent winds (usually) make for perfect sailing conditions. Personally,
I have always felt that sailing should usually require a sweatshirt (at least!).
For you racers, we have a couple of Sunfish regattas scheduled, and we have added
a cabin boat regatta to the schedule. Cabin Cup Regatta We have scheduled the 2005 Cabin Cup Regatta for Sunday, August 28. We'll meet at Windjammer at 1:00pm for a skippers' meeting, followed by racing beginning at 1:30pm on the big lake. If you own, or have access to, a cabin boat, you must join us. The racing is always so much better when the fleet is bigger. Besides, the winner will have their name added to the beautiful traveling Cabin Cup trophy. If you don't have a cabin boat but would like to try your hand at racing one, be at Windjammer at 1:00 on the 28th and we'll try to find you a ride. If you just want to watch, please come join us and cheer on your favorite skipper(s). Questions? Call Paul Schattgen at 561-8069. Sunfish Regattas Congratulations to Brynne Buell for winning the August Sunfish Regatta. Brynne took advantage of the light wind conditions to sail past the fleet in three of the four races! Brynne was joined by Josh Buell (2nd), Alex Williams (3rd), Kelly Oman (tie 4th), Ryan Livergood (tie 4th), Kris Oman (6th) and Sarah Sutherlin (7th). These dedicated junior sailors sailed all four races in a pretty steady rain, so they were all soaked to the bone by the time they got back to shore. The adults just sat on shore and shivered under their umbrellas. The September Sunfish Regatta is scheduled for September 4th. We'll gather on the C.A. Clubhouse beach no later than 1:00 for a skippers' meeting, after which the Junior Singles races will begin. Weather and participants permitting, we'll then have some Junior Doubles and then Adult Singles races. It doesn't matter if you just started sailing this week, you can race a Sunfish. Come join the fleet! All Sunfish racers will be competing for the year-end trophies, which will include some very unique hardware currently being hand-made down-under! We also have special trophies provided by Hunter Marine. Like they say, you can't win if you don't play! Social Stuff If you missed the Pirate Party on August 13, you missed a very interesting and entertaining event. More kids than we could count set sail on the little lake with treasure maps in hand in search of treasures that had been scattered about the lake by a mischievous group of pirates. Dodging cannon balls (water balloons), the kids eventually found their treasures and returned to shore to enjoy their pirate loot. It is true that some were forced to walk the plank, but sometimes that's just the price you pay for a good time. A huge thanks to our cannon ball launchers and treasure committee who made the event go so well. There were a lot of great looking (and sounding) pirates, and we can't wait till next year's event to start talking like a pirate again! We have extra Pirate Party t-shirts in youth sizes as well as S, M or L for those that are interested (see below). Mark your calendars for the end-of-season awards party. The date has changed to November 12th (previously on the 11th). We'll announce more information as the event gets closer, but we can tell you a few tidbits. There will be a chili cookoff, so start working on your chili recipes right away. There will also be a dress code this year. Everyone will be asked to dress like their favorite sailor. Are you more like JFK, Judge Smales, Gilligan, the Skipper, Long John Silver, or someone else. Start thinking about what kind of sailor you want to be. Your effort will be judged and awarded accordingly! Membership We have attached a membership list as of August 18. We now have 73 families! We welcome all the new families that have discovered sailing in Lake Saint Louis. You are now part of one of the oldest organizations in Lake Saint Louis (older than the City itself!). Whether you are a new or old member of the club, we would love to hear any suggestions you may have that could make the club even better. Just drop us a line (pearsonbuell@centurytel.net). 2006 Board As the season winds down, we have to start planning for next year. We are looking for volunteers to serve on the Sailing Club's Board of Directors. Whether you have dreams of people addressing you as "Commodore" someday, or you just want to help chart the club's course, we want to hear from you. The only thing required is your desire. This is not a huge time commitment, but you will be asked to attend monthly meetings (usually about an hour long). Please send and email to Pearson Buell (pearsonbuell@centurytel.net.com) or call 625-2154, and let us know that you want to be on the board. We'll put together a slate for the 2006 season that will be considered and approved at our end-of-season party. We look forward to hearing from you! Logo Merchandise We have official t-shirts (light blue with navy graphics, lime green with navy graphics, or black with white Pirate Party graphics - $13 each) and lime green caps (with navy embroidery - $15 each) for sale. Contact Lisa Buell if you are interested. Calendar August |
